Winners in Focus – Venue of the Year Award
Tuesday, February 11, 2014
Nominations for our Venue of the Year Award close Friday 28 February 2014 at midnight (GMT).
An award for the world’s best stadium, arena or sports venue. From the small local club venue to the mega-capacity national sports stadium; tell us which venue deserves recognition for their outstanding performance over the past 12 months, and why. Entries should refer to specific successes and achievements of the venue in the past year.
As part of our Stadium Business Awards ‘Winners In Focus’ series, we take a look back at Mercedez Benz Superdrome – New Orleans, who won the Venue of the Year 2013 Award.
The previous three Guest Event of the Year Award winners were: LIVESTRONG Sporting Park – Kansas City, Staples Center – Los Angeles and Cornellà-El Prat Stadium/RFC Espanyol, Barcelona.
The judging panel commented: “The transformation of this venue from historic – and rather tired – sports arena, then to hurrican shelter through to a new place of celebration in the heart of New Orleans is an outright winner. If stadiums are about civic pride, then any venue operator aspires to be part of the community. New Orleans’ Superdome is very much about community: a focus for the city’s downtown and a catalyst for regeneration…”
The Mercedez Benz Superdrome pipped several other high calibre shortlisted nominees to the award, including:
- Donbass Arena, Donetsk, Ukraine
- Olympic Stadium, London, UK
- Friends Arena, Stockholm, Sweden
- Sportcomplex Olimpiyskiy, Kiev, Ukraine
- Twickenham Stadium, London, UK
- Wembley Stadium, London, UK
